Organic is a standard that is free of toxic chemicals and harmful products. Before anything that is produced as organic that can be labeled organic it has to pass some well defined rules to be able to have the organic seal on it.
The standards that are set before a product is declared as organic is it has to be grown, or produced without synthetic chemicals. This would include antibiotics, pesticides and some fertilizer.
If the product is being grown, the crops has to be grown in a field that hasn't had chemicals or pesticides used on it for several years, usually this are 3 years or more. This is to ensure that the harmful chemicals that were used on the fields prior have less chance to infect the new crops.
The production of these products is subjected to on-site inspections to violations and to make sure that it is produces in compliance with the laws.
